With the fine tuning of my own speaker kit in mind I decided to share my notes from Gary's presentation with the world. Personally, I prefer his style of presentation as it closest to my own presenting goals. Particularly, I like that he opens up the mic to solve problems on the spot rather than delegating to the crowd.

Gary Vaynerchuk (@GaryVee) always is entertaining and insightful. I've rarely miss a presentation of his speaking engagements when I am in attendance of the same event. His presentations are rarely the same and they are hard not to get charged up and motivated from.

There are parts of his presentation that resonate long after the event. He is very straight forward and at not PC sometimes but the world isn't sugar coated.
So, I figured I'd share some of his quotes from SXSW 2010 today as accuratly as I remember them. It is important to see in between the lines and to formulate your own impressions and call to actions (CTA) based upon your own motivations. I do feel that Gary approaches many topics with and exceptional force of no nonsense business sense only taught to a select few from the school of hard knocks.

This SXSW 2010 presentation was by far the best I've every attended and the rapping/beat-boxing at the end was phenomenal.

Memorable Quotes From South By Southwest 2010

When does company contact reaches the point of becoming an annoyance? When do you start to feel resentful that your own time managment is being challeneged?

Incessantly ringing my door bell multiple times does not make me want to buy your product more. It is becomes and annoyance. An annoyance is also the one element of company communication that will always produce the same result.

Offline Experience:

For example, some days out of the week I work from home. When I am not traveling I am a snow bird and spend my winters in Scottsdale, AZ. It is 50-80 degrees all winter here and yes it is the lifestyle I have worked my whole life for. Hence, my simple pleasures in life include running Blue Blazing Media, LLC and planning my speaking career with the doors open and my dogs at my feet. Arizona is one of those states that is laissez-faire when it comes to door to door solicitation nine monthes out of the year. The amount of solicitors that come to my door in a day on average is six. They solicit primarily for landscaping services, donantion to charity, local dentist offices and so on. When I first moved into the house I couldn't understand why there was no doorbell on the outside of the house, now I get it :)

So I'm taking client meetings over Skype and respond to all my emails and the doorbell rings once, twice, three, four times.

How should I react? Am I really going to pay you you to mow my lawn especially, when the lawn is already mowed? Build the relationship then ask for the sale.

Online Experience:

(This applies to direct communication and NOT to social platforms and the social flow of information being delivered by those means on those platforms.)

Being an online nuisance to point of annoyance is the one element that makes me immediately drop all communication with you. If you are a company please create an editorial calendar and align all your outward facing direct communication to a considerate pace. Be considerate of others.

Something to consider when you are online is that your behavior is an extension of how you would behave around others in a face to face interaction. Your behavior online is the evolution from being an acquaintance to a trusted source and referral.

Conclusion:

Offline:
If you ring my doorbell once and I don't come to the door. Guess what? I cannot make it to the door at this time. (DUH) If you ring my doorbell multiple times until I have to come to the door just to shut you up I am in NO WAY going to buy nor promote your product or service. (user generated experience) Consider yourself lucky if I don't let one of my ferocious dogs out the door to chase you back off my property.

Online:
"The direction of least resistance will receive the most traffic and the most complements." If you email me I will get back to you at my convenience. (Of course this DOES NOT apply to clients. I love my clients and you always take first priority.) Behind the scenes you are put in my communication queue and based upon priority and moments of chaos you will be responded to.
Please don't email me twice in one day about the same topic. For example, telling me about this great sale you are having. Please don't then call me the next day to remind me of this one more item added to the sale.

Let me remind you about the rules of an Anti-Evangelist verses Evangelist for your brand. If you harass they hell out of me; "Your Brand Promoter" I will turn my promotion and all the good things I say about your product or service to my community and directly towards your competition. Period.

In every community if you harass or try to milk your evangelists of your brand they will turn and leave you in the dust. If you create a bitter taste around your brand you better be on watch to correct it. View "hydrostatic equilibrium" as a resource.

How To Fix This Issue Online:

1. Before it starts, internally within your organization communicate with each other. Assign outgoing direct communication to specific individuals. Communicate actively with your community manager and sales team. Lock everything related to a direct communication down to a date on an editorial calender. Don't try to cram it all in and be a nuisance.

2. Create better content. Content marketing is a whole exciting element of online marketing that every one I have ever met could do better at.

3. Be more approachable. Interact and use those social platforms to help your brand instead of directly emailing everyone. Let the social platform protocols act as a barrier and present content that i can view when I am tempted too.

4. Add a human element. Let me know when you will be at events that I will be at.

Interact:

What is your point of annoyance with company contact?
How much to too much?
Do you buy more or raise awareness of their brand if they contact you more?

Two weeks ago, I had the extreme pleasure of meeting the marketing mavens of the shopping mall world otherwise known as ICSC ( International Council of Shopping Centers). I was quite enlightened to be exposed to the social business model and the the retail industry.

In a way they are just starting out with the social business paradigm shift. It is unlike anything they have every experienced before and the majority of the feedback came back to the same point. "We have to trust in the voice of our employees outward facing to the public?" No traditional PR/Legal filters?" This industry is very similar to the affiliate industry only it it is more arduous. Brick and mortar businesses were designed to "sell product" but the foundations in the industry could not exist with out their silent "services" counter part. Both affiliate businesses and the retail industry know you and know how to sell to you. It is a perfect science developed over hundreds of years of research. They how you will interact and react when you are on site or in a store. More specifically, what makes you buy their products. With the paradigm shift into the social business model they are now somewhat helpless.

The tell tail traditional signs of success are not as obvious online and so it affecting their sales. Also, as new leases are completed the tenants contribution to the overall shopping centers marketing budget is slowly be negotiated to lower rates, hence putting the squeeze on each individual center. As many tenants are slowly migrating to an online business model more purchases are being made online and NOT onsite at a traditional shopping center and the traditional need to "market" and drive foot traffic to the location dwindles significantly.

Charming, Conversational and Charming Goes Miles (C.C.C.)
Building my platform and nuturing my communities is very important to me on a personal level. Surrounding myself with like minded individuals and individuals implementing what they preach is a exceptionally important as well. So, traversing out my way to meet someone new is always worth the effort. The three sentence elevator pitch has become diminished to 140 characters or less now days due to time restrictions and the evolution of the social business interaction.

Tips and Tricks For Being Memorable Online and Offline
The three sentence (better known as the Elevator pitch) is the base model for my conversations with many new individuals I meet in passing. There is a certain sense of brevity associated with conversations in passing that should be taken under consideration as well. With the invention of social technologies everyone moves a little quicker so brevity in conversations have become a desired quality.

The Human Factor Adds Quality
The infamous "what do you do?" question has become the door opener and most commonly used question amongst new acquaintances. It is over used and carries an inappropriate amount of floundering to be completely honest. In truth, we are involved in many different elements in day to day life. We all are involved in what we have passion for, the life we want and the actual day to day tasks that pays the bills. All tasks have emotions attached to each one that run somewhere along the lines of what we thought we wanted it, we tried to get it, then we have it; so what is next?

I think the "what do you do?" question to be incredibly hard to answer with brevity in mind. So, when I meet others I ask what do they have passion for? Is it what you do day to day? That usually leads to a more weighted conversation that I can remember memorable points about who you are rather than your serial pitch.

Some Sample Conversational Elements I Prefer.
Feel free to elaborate and curtail to your conversation needs.

1> What do you really enjoy doing day to day? (It defines who you are and your interests in bite sized memorable bits.)
Example:
"My business card says I'm a CTO for Apple but I really love outdoor trail running and I blog about all my adventures and make little videos of nature when I'm running on the trails. I would run everyday if I could."

2> What do you want to do? Do you have a sense of passion for something specific?
Example:
"Apple keeps me busy but I'm looking to venture into a side project soon. I would like to create a mobile GPS app for other trail runners that guides them and you can add reviews to as well, kinda like a Yelp for worthy trails."

3> What projects are you working on currently?
Personal or professional are you working on anything interesting or memorable?
Example:
"The new tablet is our new and most useful tool. Although I have been unable to incorporate it into my trail running hobbies I have been able to add imput in version 2.0 of the tablet and that has been a fun experience."

Significantly Important
Conversations are built on a two way experience. One person speaks and one listens. That means you don't speak over someone when they respond to you. Common courtesy is very important all around. (Seriously, where you raised in a barn? No offense to those who were raised in a barn.) Relationships are built on ongoing conversation not ongoing sales pitches. You can be memorable with out being repetitive and abrasive.

Business Cards, Mobile Connections
I personally don't mind receiving business cards but I receive so many it is difficult to remember everybody and their associated projects. I feel this probably common amongst most individuals who speak often.

Some apps that I prefer to use include BUMP and Linkedin has a new app called INPerson that is extremely efficient. These are beneficial when you run out of business cards, exchange more information than you would if you just had business cards. They also also allow for long term association if you use Linkedin. (See Linkedin tips and tricks). Either way the exchange should always happen after the conversation, not before.

You Are A Brand
You are a brand and your actions, business cards and site should reflect that accurately and consistently.

Your Business Card Should Have The Following Information:
Name, Title, Company Name and Logo, company location, brief description of what your company's products or services, blog url, website url, twitter name. Since I tend to write down memorable items from our conversation on the back of your card I suggest that there is a white space to do just that.

**Hint** If you don't have a blog or personal URL use your Linkedin URL.

Ques:
What information is on your business card? If I looked at it would I know exactly what you specialized in before speaking with you? Or do you need that sales pitch to get to the point of what you do?

My four descriptive sentences are summarize what I have passion for which I happen to to DO as well. For example, I have passion for social business, community building and all aspects of branding (personal and professional). I present about such topics around how to use social media to build your brand in a hand full of industries (strategy). I am publishing two books in the next couple months and am looking for feedback at that time. Blue Blazing Media (my company) implements everything from web design to mobile and everything in between.

3. SXSW 2010 is sure to be a blast and I'm eager to meet those I have not met before. I totally encourage you to come say "Hello" if you see me. I have more than a handful of appointments, brain storming sessions lined up which always turns in impromptu meetings in the hallway! I also own Blue Blazing Media and we are growing digital marketing group. I definitely will be scouting for cutting edge individuals making waves in their own specialities. Blue Blazing Media is looking build some professional relationships as well.

It's January and I despise the "2010 lists" as they all end up being popularity lists with no value. This list crosses many verticals but all use online technologies to benefit their particular brand.

This list is unique as it is a collection of women who are in technology or are using an array of tech tools online including social media. They are implementing their ideas and strategies across other verticals. They understand the value that they offer, they have a passion for their ideals and finally they implement these concepts daily. These are the women who will push past the pack in 2010. You should pay attention. They are making their own rules and boundaries. Most will also present at your event or conference.

They are "Game Changers". (Upcoming interview series)

It is up to you to find valuable content online and to be objective when you consume such content. This list consists of many women you may never have heard of. They are not focused on gaining popularity they are focused on their vertical and content. Some are entrepreneurial and some are corporate based, but all are implementing their concepts daily. It is up to you to recognize their talents.

You can also find more influential women at the Women Of Web 3.0 Group.

Did I miss someone? You can add more women worth recognizing to this list in the comment section below.

Your community is diversified as your readers or viewers likes and dislikes differ. Everyone visits your site for different reasons with different expectations. A great community manager tests your content that works and content that does not. In conjunction with site traffic results it is easy to determine your community's content strengths and weaknesses. Another service that I am a fan of is CrazyEgg and ClickTale. Crazy Egg show heat maps over your site, Cick tale shows you a video of your site. There is no right or wrong in this situation. You learn and adapt the site for better traffic results. One other great product is Tim Ash's AttentionWizard. It tracks eye traffic when the site isn't even out of development. I give you permission to test away!
Below is a little video I recorded last month on the SocialFresh Cruise. Too pretty to not share with my readers. Also, includes a sneak peek into my new company.

Community building and management is one of those areas in which I excel at. The enjoyment that I get by creating a "buzz" around a brand online to me is just well the cat's meow. It is that raw talent that has inspired two other communities Women of Web 3.0 and RetailSherpa.org.

Recently, I attended the Social Fresh #SoCruise with a select group of distinguish group on individuals who are considered elite in their particular area of focus. It was a great opportunity to detox from the hustle and bustle of the daily activities of running an online media company. Amazingly the emails and texts were all still there when we pulled back into the Port of Miami.

The event held several hidden values. Most relevant would be the individuals on the trip. Face to face meetings always solidify the relationship. Another hidden value was the solitude and ability to create multiple blogs posts and content when the email quieted. Finally, living in Arizona I did not realize how much I missed the water and Catamaran sailing upon it. Multihulls watch out, here I come.

In summary, I'm going to write a couple ebooks in the next couple months around the concept of adding value to your community, creating captivating content, how creating content and products actually creates opportunities for you and your brand and finally finding who your community personas actually are and the business model that glues it all together.

Whats is your favorite type of content? What do you click on first when you come to a new site?

Yesterday was my my birthday but not just my own birthday it's my blog's birthday as well. I escaped the normal flow of things and disconnected to gain a little insight. A year ago i started my community building blog with the intent to share my knowledge, discoveries and experiences with other like minded individuals. A year has past and its time for some house cleaning and a bit of refreshing.

1. Find your foundation.

My blog is designed based on the algorithm that online communities are constructed of a diversify of individuals all requesting varying types of content in order to feel that connection. Communities need to compliment pre-established brands. They need to offer insight and education to build trusted relationships with the consumer. You need a strong background in traditional marketing fundamentals and hands-on knowledge of how to implement social media. Finally, you need time and the option of a social dashboard combined with SEO in which to measure your results against your goals. If you couldn't tell I "heart" social strategy and connecting the consumer's voice actively and efficiently with large brands and corporations.

So, my blog needs a little love inside and out to adapt in 2010. Plus, who doesn't like a little change. So these are my steps to keep Jive From The Hive growing.

2. Hello? Is there anybody out there?

Very similar to fresh produce at the grocery store keeping the content fresh and post regularly is important. No one goes to the grocery to to buy the wilted and smelly produce. I myself am guilty of not putting my thoughts and experiences to paper often enough.

3. Step it up a notch. Does it still offer objective opinions and insight into you industry and or focus?

When creating content I am developing my own editorial calendar to keep up and on track with regularity. Breaking the content into seven types of topics that I feel will offer my readers a well rounded and objective information. Here are some ideas for content news, innovation, tools, case studies, how to's, reevaluating previous posts, brand evaluations and opinions.

4. Content Types - Expand to meet you diversified audience's desires
Be creative and experiment with varying types of content. We are not all readers, some of us take a lot more away from a diagram that four pages of text in less time. Your community will thank you.

5. Embrace where you came from. See the steps in front of you.

The last year has included lots of little steps to get up and running. But, slow and steady wins the race. I've found a new venue for conveying my passion of delivering information and a more hands on approach via speaking and presenting. Some of the mediums I've been sharing content through for years I can finally implement through my new company Blue Blazing Media. (site under development) Two new communities are also under development under the Blue Blazing Media umbrella. Sneak peak at Retailsherpa.org, Women of Web 3.0..

6. Call to Action. Where is your business model around your thoughts?

Jive From The Hive was developed as an outlet to demonstrate how lead generation through community building was a new way of fulfilling social business communications and building function ecosystems around brand awareness. Over the last year I have been able to define the products that I sell around my blog. I professionally speak to organizations and educate companies how to build, implement, and measure realistic social objectives around communities. I supply a call to action to the "next step". What do you offer to your readers.

7. What is in the future?

Define your goals and your algorithm to get there. I have mine and it is top secret. Sorry, you will have to define your own. It is important so do it. Jive From The Hive now has a news letter where more specific on point information is revealed. We will have more free educations products such as ebooks, videos and webinars in conjunction with Blue Blazing Media. The Jive From The Hive community will continue to grow and offer social community building objective advice.

 8. Test Everything

Test all your links. I am personally guilty of breaking links regularly.

9. Design elements.

Argh! Why don't you have a search bar?

We are all guilty of this whether it is a website or it is a blog the design elements are critical to your success. Mike Smith offers a great deal of insight into required design processes over at DesignBump.

Here are some highlights:
-No search bar
-Too many advertisements (no one will click on anything on your page if you are pestered except the "X")
-Hard to find navigation bar
-No author information
-Poor content
-Contact page
-Blatant disregard for SEO - (former SEO girl here - this is my pet peeve)
-No way to share content to any other site
-No way for visitors to subscribe if they want more content. (BTW - totally lame)

I hope this offers insight into your own challenges if not just insight into creating blogging goals for 2010.
